Annex 1: Other information on participation in projects using the MOTUS system
Purpose of MOTUS
MOTUS is the collective name for a system that can measure and analyse objective data of physical movement. The system consists of three technological solutions that together can tell you how much you sit, stand, run, cycle, sleep and how many steps you take. The three technological solutions are:
- A movement sensor
- A mobile app
- A cloud-based storage and automatic analysis of data
The physical activity data will be used for research, as well as to provide you with personalised feedback with information about your activity level for the days you have worn the movement sensor
How the measuring system works
The Movement Sensor: The movement sensor is worn on the thigh and is used to measure your physical movement. The measurements are analysed automatically and can provide information about how much you sit and lie, how much you stand, how much you walk, how much you run, how much you cycle, how much you climb stairs, and how many steps you take
The mobile app: To access the app and pair it with a movement sensor, the system needs your mobile phone number. The mobile app is used to record your working and sleeping times and acts as a so-called "gateway", sending data from the movement sensor, as well as your recorded working and sleeping times, securely to a cloud-based server. This feature requires you to give the app access to bluetooth and location so that it can connect to the movement sensor. Location access will not be used to determine the phone's location via GPS.
The cloud solution: Your measurements and records in the app are sent via a secure connection to a cloud-based server. Data stored on the server is:
- Physical movement data from the sensor (accelerometer)
- Self-reported work and sleep times
When you sign up for the project, a unique ID number is created for you and the data on the server will be linked to this number.
Built into this cloud solution is a computer program that automatically processes and analyses your movement measurements and recorded work and sleep times. Once the data collection is complete, the measurements and times will be analysed together. Your personal feedback is displayed in the app
Your participation
Participation in measurements with the MOTUS system is completely voluntary. You choose whether to wear the motion sensor and record your working and sleeping times, and can stop your participation at any time and take off the equipment
The personal data will be analysed collectively and form knowledge about movement patterns during work and leisure time across the population and within specific subgroups such as job type. The NFA will conduct analyses on anonymised data and results will be processed and presented in a way that will not identify responses from individuals
